About the Museum
The Viesīte Museum “Sēlija” is a publicly accessible cultural institution dedicated to research, education, and heritage preservation. It operates as a structural unit of the Jēkabpils Municipality and is supervised by the municipality. The museum was established on 5 July 2000 by a decision of the Viesīte City Council.
Museum Mission
The mission of the Viesīte Museum “Sēlija” is to preserve, research, and promote the cultural and historical heritage of Viesīte and the Sēlija region. The museum seeks to perpetuate the legacy of the ancient Sēlians, foster regional identity, and encourage pride, self-confidence, and a sense of belonging among the people of Sēlija.
Museum Activities
The museum carries out the following activities:
- Development, preservation, and management of the museum collection;
- Public engagement, educational programmes, and communication activities;
- Research and scholarly work related to the cultural history of Viesīte and the Sēlija region;
- Coordination and supervision of cultural and historical heritage sites within the Viesīte area;
- Preservation and promotion of the traditional culture and intangible heritage of Sēlija;
- Maintenance and management of museum buildings, facilities, and surrounding territories;
- Provision of tourism and visitor services.
Museum consists of 2 departments — Narrow gauge railway park and Pauls Stradiņš school in Viesīte town.
